Dragonfly Wings Construction Paper Craft

Dragonflies have different muscles for each of their wings so that they can control each wing separately. This allows them to easily fly both backward and forwards, with the same amount of energy. Scientists have been observing dragonflies with slow motion videos. They use these observations to create flying robots and future flying vehicles. With this project we will be creating a basic Dragonfly with movable wings. I chose to do an orange Dragonfly since the Orange Meadow Hawk Dragonfly is located in Montana. What is needed:

Materials
  • Crayons or Colored Pencils (White and black)
  • Straightened paperclips
  • Tape
  • Construction Paper
  • Glue
  • Tissue Paper
  • Yarn or some kind of string

When cutting out the template pieces, remember that it is ok if there are jagged edges around the construction and tissue paper. If you zoom into my example, you can see rough edges here and there. Also, wicked quick note, I added in extra eyes, legs, and wing pieces, incase you fudge a piece while you are cutting them out. Remember to have fun and feel free to share your creations via Email to Lindseyrae7@icloud.com, or tag me on Social Media!

Template for Dragonfly
First glue your head and your body down onto your paper.
Next, Glue your eyeballs on the head.
After your eyes, glue down your 6 legs.
Tie String around the straightened paperclip and poke a hole in the paper with a pair of scissors. Pull Through. Do this 3 more times.
Flip project back over and tape the tissue paper wing to the paperclip. Make sure the string is also taped at the end of the clip. Do this 3 more times.
Once you’re finished, flip over and tie both sides separately together to secure your wings. Give a little space so that all 4 wings can still move by themselves.
Add in the body lines with the black crayon. Put dots for the eyes with the white crayon. Once you are finished with the little details, write the name of your Dragonfly, or create a cool scene in the background!
